Pharmaceutical litigation is an area of law that receives a great deal of attention in the media. Millions of people take all kinds of prescription medications for a variety of medical conditions. Sadly, some drugs cause serious, or even fatal, side effects. The prescription drug Xarelto has led to significant bleeding concerns for thousands of patients. The Boca Raton pharmaceutical litigation attorneys at Osborne & Associates Law Firm, P.A. represent Xarelto victims throughout Florida and across the United States.
What is Xarelto?
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a prescription blood thinner manufactured by Bayer and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary. Xarelto was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 as a means to prevent blood clots in patients that have recently undergone joint replacement surgery. Xarelto is not also used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with Atrial Fibrillation and as a preventive regimen for patients at risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Xarelto is marketed as an easier way to prevent blood clots due to its uniform dose guidelines for all patients. Previous anticoagulation treatment with warfarin, or Coumadin, required patients to make significant diet and lifestyle changes in addition to seeing their doctor on a regular basis. As Xarelto has gained popularity, recent safety and efficacy studies found that more than 70% of patients reported experiencing side effects, some of which are potentially life-threatening.
Serious side effects and risks accompany the use of Xarelto
Since its introduction a mere four years ago, Xarelto has become equally known for its potential side effects and serious health risks. The most common risks associated with Xarelto include:
- Uncontrollable abdominal bleeding
- Abnormal liver function
- Brain hemorrhage
- Reduced platelet levels
A 2012 study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery also illustrated the increased risk of wound infections and complications for hip and knee replacement patients taking Xarelto. Despite these warning signs, many doctors and healthcare providers continue to prescribe Xarelto without thoroughly examining a patient’s risk status or explaining the enhanced risk level to patients.
